Everyone loves dinosaurs. If they say that they don't, their either lying or someone not worth knowing because they are a liar! Dinosaurs are the coolest. That's why it's important to have a dino themed recipe in your apron for when the occasion demands it. Bake any time or when you feel like enjoying the best dinosaur franchise ever. Dino-waffles make meals whimsical and will be a tasty way to listen to the Geeky Gab podcast episode: Lower Your Jeff Goldblum Expectations where we take a look at the Jurassic Park franchise. If you're not in the mood to enjoy Chilean sea bass like hardcore Jurassic Park fans, a dino-waffle is a simpler (and tastier) substitution!
There's nothing terribly difficult about making a dino-waffle, so if you're short on time because you're running from Velociraptors or just want to make something easy that the kids will love, this is perfect. There are three ways to make the dino-waffle: the expert way, the easy way, and the lazy way.
The Expert Way Ingredients:
2 cups Flour
2 Eggs
1 ¾ cups Milk
½ cup Vegetable Oil
1 tablespoon Sugar (white)
4 teaspoons Baking Powder
¼ teaspoon Salt
½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Round Waffle Iron
The Easy Way Ingredients:
2 cups Pre-made Waffle Mix
1 Egg
1 1/3 cup Milk
2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
Round Waffle Iron
The Lazy Way Ingredients:
1 package of Round Frozen Waffles
Toaster or Microwave
All:
Strawberries, sliced into quarters so they look like triangles
Banana, sliced in half the long way
Pineapple wedges can be used with or instead of strawberries
Watermelon, Cantaloupe, or Honeydew Melon, sliced into triangles can also be substituted.
Grapes
Toothpicks
The Expert Way:
Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir or whisk until the batter is completely smooth and mixed all the way through. There should be no clumps of flour or sugar.
Plug in and turn on waffle iron.
Spray waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray so that the waffle can be easily removed.
Pour batter onto waffle iron until it covers a small circle in the center. Do not fill the whole iron with batter as it will expand and drip out the sides once you close it and it starts cooking.
Close lid and let cook until golden and firm.
Remove from waffle iron and put on plate.
Cut the waffle into two half, semi-circles.
Put each half on its own plate (it will be two servings/ two dinos)
Stick a toothpick through a grape the long way and pierce it into one of the tips of the waffle (a pointed end) for the head.
Stick a tooth pick through four more grapes the long way and attach to the flat end of the waffle equal distance apart to be the feet.
Arrange the sliced triangles of fruit around the curve of the waffle to be the plates of the stegosaurus.
On the other half, semi-circle waffle, arrange the banana sliced length wise to attach to a pointed end of the waffle (round side of waffle on top, flat side on bottom.)
Stick a tooth pick through four more grapes the long way and attach to the flat end of the waffle equal distance apart to be the feet.
Use a fruit wedge or triangle for the head and attach to the top of the banana that is not secured to the waffle using a toothpick.
Use fruit triangles and arrange from the opposite, pointed end of the waffle (where the banana isn't) in alternating position. One will point up, the next will point down so that it forms a chain that looks like a tail.
The Easy Way:
It's the same as the Expert way, but you have a lot less ingredients to mix.
The Lazy Way:
Remove frozen waffle from freezer and package.
Put in toaster or microwave and follow heating directions.
Cut in half so that there are two semi-circles.
Follow Expert directions for turning it into a dino.
There you have it! Three ways to make dino waffles. Be as create as you want. These pictures show the creativity on how people have made different kinds of dinos with waffles and fruit!
