At San Diego Comic Con, there was no shortage of big reveals and massive trailer releases, both TV and film alike. However, one of the crown jewels that has everyone talking, especially me, was the new trailer for "Godzilla: King of the Monsters." It's going to be a long wait for May 31st. The trailer did exactly what it needed, giving audiences an idea of what's coming, but didn't fully reveal the new monsters. But a lot of fan theories came up and questions are firing left and right. Here are the biggest questions we have to ask. If you missed the trailer, it's embedded below. And if want to avoid any speculation/potential spoilers, don't read anything a below the video.
What other monsters may show up?
During the panel at SDCC, director Michael Dougherty teased that we haven't seen everything and there are some surprises in store. Which leads you to wonder: who else from Godzilla's past movies is bound to show up?
With the roster confirmed to include already infamous kaiju Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, it would seem a waste to introduce another big villain such as Gigan or Destroyah, who have been very problematic for Gojira. And in this universe it'd be a little odd to have any robotic monsters show up such as Mechagodzilla, Jet Jaguar or Moguera.
So who's left? Dougherty would be mistaken to tease more monsters if they weren't a little iconic. If such monsters like Kamacuras, Gabara, or Ebirah show up. To keep us in the dark to only have a throwaway character would be disappointing.
Therefore, it seems like there's a fine line of a monster that they could tease, or people would love to see but doesn't necessarily have to be in an entire movie. The likeliest candidates could be:
BATTRA: The Yang to Mothra's Yin, Battra could be a great surprise and give Mothra a subplot until she is ready to enter the major fray with Ghidorah and Godzilla. However, Mothra looks to be tied up with the humans, giving Battra pretty slim odds.
BIOLLANTE: An unlikely inclusion, but an iconic monster. And with the environment playing a part, who better than the plant-based kaiju? They'd likely not have the monster be a genetic blend of a rose and Godzilla's cells, that'd be an over-complicated subplot for what's likely going to be an already crowded movie, but a new iteration of Biollante would be most welcome!
KING CAESAR: Since it's called "King of the Monsters," why not have a battle to see who is the rightful king? After all, Godzilla will have to prove himself against King Ghidorah, so why not add one more king to show Godzilla is the rightful heir?
ANGUIRUS: If you could bet at Vegas on who's showing up, Anguirus would likely be the safest best. He was Godzilla's first opponent, and became an underappreciated supporting player. It'd be easy to give him an update to fit within this universe too! And he could serve a similar purpose as Godzilla vs. Mechadodzilla in getting stomped by the big bad (in this case Ghidorah) to build up the larger threat.
Rest of the candidates either seem too farfetched for this universe (Hedorah & Orga) or wouldn't be as well recognized by the casual fan (Megalon, Titanosaurus & Megaguirus), but there could be some casual fights to tease us with Kumonga or some fan favorites that haven't gotten their fair share like Gorosaurus, Varan or Baragon.
And we're all expecting some sort of setup or end-credit tease for Kong himself to set up the big fight coming in 2020!
Why are people complaining about the environmental message?
A lot of people seem upset that the movie's plot seems to include an environmental message about humans being a virus destroying the planet. The best response is to use a quote from Galaxy Quest by the irreplaceable Sam Rockwell, "Did you guys watch the show?"
Godzilla movies in the past have always dealt with social issues and environmental problems. The amount of greedy businessmen in the Toho entries would be hard to count. And if big corporations ruining the planet aren't an antagonist for the plot, then aliens taking over a planet because we keep screwing up take their place. Especially when Mothra, a massive metaphor for Mother Earth herself, shows up.
And frankly, we are screwing up the planet. I'm not saying I agree with Vera Farmiga's character. She seems wrong in the way she's going about it, but she's not wrong in what she's saying.
Is that Fire Rodan?
The trailer teased the new monsters perfectly, showing shadowed shots or their back, something was always hidden. However, two shots of Rodan flying showed a fiery glow at the end of the wings. Which means not only are we getting Rodan, but there's a distinct chance we're getting Fire Rodan, who was an iteration in the Heisei Era entry Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. It'd make Rodan a much bigger threat because I've been concerned Rodan will be the afterthought in this movie, Fire Rodan adds a lot more to the character and what it's capable of doing in terms of damage!
Will Millie Bobby Brown have a Psychic Connection to Mothra?
Mothra has always connected to humans. After all, she is the protector of earth, and therefore shares a bond few other kaiju have with us. I didn't expect the singing twins to summon her, although I will be sad if there isn't at least an easter egg thrown in there!
Regardless, it seems Mothra will have a definite connection to Millie Bobby Brown's character. It seems like the creature she's reaching out to is Mothra during the larvae stage, and we see a glowing egg-shaped formation.
Brown has a history of playing characters with tough psychic issues with otherworldly creatures, so ti's not a stretch. And with Mothra's love for children,it's safe to say that if it's not a direct psychic connection, then there will at least be a loving relationship formed.
It appears Brown will be at odds with her mother, played by Fermiga, so could Mothra be a surrogate replacement for her human mother, who will likely be the bigger monster (figuratively speaking)?
Just how freaking big will King Ghidorah be?
The three-headed dragon-esque kaiju has almost always outdone Godzilla in terms of size. The rare exception being with Ghidorah's only time playing a good guy, then Godzilla had the dominant frame. But if the one shot of Ghidorah expanding its wings is an indicator, it's going to be astronomically huge!
What is that tiny blue glowing thing? Is that a gem, or a plane with lights on it? If so, humans are going to have zero chance of doing anything to Ghidorah but distract it while the other monsters charge (if they do, no way of telling if the movie will be an exact retelling of Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster from the sixties where all three monsters team up to take down the big bad!)
Who is Charles Dance playing?
This is internet speculation currently, but a fun theory this author cannot take credit for, BTW! Here's some proper credit for the initial report from ScreenRant here.
Director Michael Dougherty said at Comic Con one character from Kong: Skull Island was showing up to provide breadcrumbs for 2020's Kong vs. Godzilla movie. He didn't specify who it was though. The internet's best theory is Charles Dance (most recently famous as everyone's least favorite father on Game of Thrones) is playing Tom Hiddleston's character from K:SI. It makes perfect sense, they're both well put together British gentlemen. When you look at ScreenRant's side-by-side, the similarities are definitely there! Dance's age roughly matches how long it would've been too!
You see it, right? Perhaps his character stuck around with Monarch after the events on Skull Island and will be a through character into the next installment of our monster universe!
What questions did you have coming from the new trailer? Are you as excited as me for next year?
